Uncomplicated Summer Styles

Poised, as we are, at the pinnacle of the summer, it is the perfect time for two very important things: relaxation and reflection. At this point, one should have embraced a mellow mindset (rigid style rules simply aren’t appropriate) and may begin to leisurely meditate on what the next season holds. Now this doesn’t mean you can look like a sloppy beast just because it’s July, nor are we implying that you should have already purchased your entire fall wardrobe, no no! However, we do suggest that you take a tip or three from the above ladies and put together uncomplicated, stylish, summer outfits that start the transition into autumn trends.

Go for flats with your favorite wide-leg pants.

While normally we’re quite strict and insist upon wearing our wide-legged trousers with wedges (the taller, the better), as summer unfolds, we’re finding ourselves relaxing our shoe standards. Specifically, when we saw a picture of Kirsten Dunst strolling in Manhattan wearing a pair of Acne’s high-waisted flared L.U.V. Jeans ($299) with a sensible pair of shoes and Gucci sunglasses, we had to admit she looked darling. Whatever you do, just make sure you’ve hemmed to the appropriate length, as tripping over too-long pants is never a sophisticated look.

Ease into ripped denim for fall.

There’s something about a slightly distressed jean that we just adore: it’s a little tough and definitely sexy in a casual way. Ashley Olsen, seen here strolling in Los Angeles in her own self-distressed Earnest Sewn Harlan Jeans, saved herself from looking too grungy by choosing a pair that is only slightly thrashed at the knees. While we love the fully-beat up jean shorts Alexander Wang showed for fall—adore them, actually—generally speaking, the fewer tears and holes in your pants, the more chic you will look. Right now, American Eagle Outfitters has an amazing version of Olsen’s ripped jeans. Their Favorite Boyfriend Jeans ($49.50) are just worn-in enough and have a classic straight leg fit. We’re also crazy about J. Crew’s Distressed Vintage Slim Jeansicon ($135) for their dark color and slim leg. In about a month or so, also look for the new Houston wash from Joe’s Jeans and 7 For All Mankind’s bootcut jeans in their new distressed Vintage California style.

Start collecting some heavy metal accessories.

The second we saw Kate Moss stepping out for a lunch date in London wearing a heavy silver coin necklace around her neck and equally weighty silver bracelets and rings, we fell in love with her look. There’s something romantic and bohemian (romo and boho, if you will) about the pieces she chose, and the overall effect is very global gypsy. Plus, in addition to looking fresh right now, these heavy metal accessories will still be important next season (they’re very Gucci Fall 08). To get you started, we like Fallon’s Machine Age Bangle ($165) for its rugged beauty, the Filigree Ring ($151) by The Branch, and Wasabi’s Multi Chain Bracelet ($90). We also were delighted to find some amazing sterling silver rings at Kohl’s (like the Striped Dome Ring ($85) and the Antiqued Ring ($45)), most of which are buy one, get one free. We suggest that you find a friend with similar taste, pool your money, and stock up on these smart buys.
