The 85th annual Academy Awards aired on Sunday night, with stars like Anne Hathaway, Christophe Waltz, Daniel Day Lewis, and Jennifer Lawrence all walking off with awards for their achievements in film this year. The real talk of the evening, however, came before the official telecast even began, as all these stars and more walked the carpet in their best borrowed duds.
A few trends of the evening became evident very early on in the evening. Strapless, full skirted ball gowns were spotted on the likes of Lawrence, Amy Adams, and Jennifer Aniston, though all but Aniston wore them in very muted colors like pale pink or misty grey. Aniston’s bright red Valentino gown was not the only spot of crimson on the carpet. Sally Field also stunned in a Valentino gown in the signature shade, and Marcia Gay Harden also wore red. Amanda Seyfried wore a red gown during her performance with the rest of the cast of Les Mis, but walked the red carpet in a cream and ivory Alexander McQueen column dress.
The only other spots of color on the red carpet were Jennifer Garner, in a gorgeous plum gown by Gucci, that featured an elegant ruffled train and bustle, Reese Witherspoon in cobalt blue Louis Vuitton, and Helen Hunt in a navy blue discount dress by H&M.
