Quest for the Best Beauty Product: The Truth Behind the Counter

by Beyond Beauty Basics

A few days ago, I started asking the staff at other cosmetic counters around me what product they thought was the BEST product on their line. Some of them were so programmed by their companies that they instantly gave the response of the top selling product and it’s description. Others gave me the most expensive (as they’re on commission). After questioning further, they realized that I wasn’t going to buy it, but was just interested and they gave me the truth (although, some of them really did like the top selling or most expensive product).

Here are some on my findings:

Yves Saint Laurent
Touche Eclat, Radiant touch

This product does happen to be (if not the top selling) one of the top selling products that YSL has. Although most customers think it’s a concealer, it’s actually a highlighting pen. You use it after foundation and concealer in areas that are recessed to make the area appear to not be as deep. It has a nice consistency, it’s not shimmery and it’s not a greasy mess. It has an easy application (just click the bottom and the product flows out of a brush on the other end).
Other companies have tried to copy this product, but it’s still (by far) the best.

$38.50

Available at neimanmarcus.com, bergdorfgoodman.com, saks.com, Nordstrom.com and Bloomingdales.

Lancome Secret de Vie

(Lancome’s blurb) Lancôme Innovation Laboratories reveal a secret: Extrait de Vie™, a unique concentrate of six ingredients that delivers intense restorative action to six major cell types for instant, visible, exceptional results.
As this moisturizer is one of the best that Lancome offers (and is nice), I can understand why someone working at the counter (who doesn’t get out much) would love it.

$225.00

Available at neimanmarcus.com, bergdorfgoodman.com, saks.com, Nordstrom.com

My personal favorite from Lancome is the Maquicomplete Concealer (I’ll post on it later)

La Prairie
Skin Caviar Concealer Foundation SPF 15

This foundation and concealer combination truly has one of the best finishes I’ve seen. It firms the skin almost immediately after application and leaves a beautiful satin, skin-like finish. The color range could be better and the concealer must be applied first (as it is considerably lighter than the foundation). The price tag includes the foundation, a concealer (in the lid) and a concealer brush.

$165.00

Available at neimanmarcus.com, bergdorfgoodman.com, saks,com Nordstrom.com and Bloomindales.
