Keep it simple with your makeup brushes!

by Paul Baranda

Ok, I was reading the funniest article today, I won’t say from where, but it was talking about the “tools” you would need to do your makeup. It was actually quite entertaining!!! There are really no rules on what type of brush does what; it all depends on what look you are trying to achieve. As an artist, when I look at a canvas, a face, or whatever it is… I look at the brushes and use them for what I want. I don’t care if the brush says concealer on it. I use it for what I want to use it for. The article even said to use a plastic tool to stop from getting mascara on your face when you do your bottom lashes!!! Sooo funny! All you need to do is use a tissue to cover your face while you do your mascara. If you have a q-tip like everyone else, just use a little makeup remover and wipe the q-tip under your lashes to remove any excess. Yes, it is that simple! You don’t have to use a plastic tool that retails for $6 to keep the mascara off your cheeks.

The bottom line is, your brushes are an investment and you can have them for a very long time, but just treat them right. Be sure to wash them! Once a week is fine, and just with a little baby shampoo or a brush cleaner( I love the MAC brush cleaner for only $9). You can find it at Nordstrom.com. Always be sure to wash your brushes and go in the direction of the bristles; be sure not to press too hard and be nice to your brushes, because they are an investment.

Start with these brushes…

To start your collection, be sure to get the basics:

  • Large, all over shadow brush - Trish McEvoy is known for her brushes, they are gorgeous! Any brush from her collection will do but definitely check out her all-over shadow brush.
  • Crease brush - my favorite is the MAC #217 blending brush. It can create a high crease, or a deep crease. You can work the brush in so many ways, just practice!
  • Liner brush, angled work the best - you can wet them or keep them dry, Make-up Designory Angle Liner brush for $12 is perfect. You can always use this brush to do your eyebrows too. I like to get the most out of my brushes, multiple uses.
  • Large powder brush - Laura Mercier has the perfect one, only $52 and it is made from natural fibers. Also use this for bronzer too!
  • Blush brush - CoverGirl will do the job and it can be found at any drugstore.

Later you can build your brush collection with concealar, foundation, and other brushes to create any look, but start with the basics.
