A Beautiful Legacy: Farrah Fawcett dies at 62

by Jennifer Long

Farrah FawcettWe all remember that iconic red swimsuit. You are probably familiar with it even if you weren’t alive in 1976 (which I wasn’t – side note). Farrah Fawcett, a beauty icon, died today at the age of 62 (February 2, 1947-June 25, 2009).

She was probably as well known for her feathered hair, as she was for her role in “Charlie’s Angels.” Most recently, she had been filmed as part of a documentary on her battle with rectal cancer. Although Fawcett’s longtime partner Ryan O’Neal recently proposed to her again, she was sadly too weak to marry him before her death. Farrah and Ryan have a son together, Redmond O’Neal.

Fawcett was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2006, and though it went into remission, it reappeared last year. As part of her documentary, Farrah hoped that she could beat her cancer, and remained positive.

In the beauty world we may often dwell on beautiful looks, her famous hair, or her perfect figure. Farrah Fawcett inspired us all with her positive attitude, her determination, and of course her impact on style. But most of all, we will remember her courage.

British Pop R&B Star Estelle Thinks About Her Own Shoe Line

by Paul Baranda

Jonathan Kelsey and EstelleThe always charming British Pop R&B star, Estelle, tells WWD at the Belvedere Black Rasberry launch, “I love accessories”.   A recent collaboration with designer Jonathan Kelsey for a project with Belvedere Vodka leaves Estelle contemplating about starting her own shoe line.  The pair designed the “Belvie” bag which retails for $1,400 and even has a secret pocket to carry a bottle of Belvedere Vodka around!  “And I’d love to have my own line, ” reveals the  stylish singer who was sporting a white Martin Margiela jacket and matching trousers.

Known for sexy and intelligent footwear, the young designer Jonathan Kelsey is Britain’s new buzz. If he’s giving Estelle inspirational tips from honing his skills at Jimmy Choo, Luella, and Mulberry, I’d expect that a sexy, intense, yet elegant collection could be born.  It seems that the Brits have been busy with some footwork… I think nextdoor neighbor Christian Louboutin just rolled his eyes.

Celebrity Spotting and Nomad Clothes at DVF Fall 2009

by Kate Monahan

I love the fashion, I do, but I am equally smitten with the celebs that come to view the fashion. I had to let you, our readers, in on the celebs I spotted at the star packed Diane von Furstenberg Fall 2009 runway show.

Diana Ross and Diane Sawyer sat front row alongside The Devil Wear’s Prada inspiration—Anna Wintour (I just love that bob and those trademark sunglasses).

Julia Stiles and Brittany Snow sat side by side across from Heidi Klum who chatted with Tim Gunn and Molly Sims who was with her infamous stylist Rachel Zoe.

I had the quick chance to ask Molly Sims a few questions. Molly looked chic with her hair pulled back, and fashionable wearing one of the seasons must have accessories: a bold necklace. I asked her what other shows she had seen and she admitted that DVF was her first show of the 2009 season. She laughed and her southern accent charmed. When I asked her what she planned to do during her visit to NY she exclaimed: “Publicity for my movie! Go see it! It’s called Fired-Up.” I assured her I would and she grabbed my arm like an old friend would. I admit I was pleased to later learn that her movie actually got some great reviews. Critics tout it a hybrid of Bring it On and American Pie.

I was amazed, sure, by all these celeb sightings, but I have to say, yes, the biggest star of the show was the fashion. DVF’s clothes were just beautiful—the collection was made for the “modern, constant traveler,” there were many layers, making it easy to move from day to night, and lots of prints and shapes that would completely flatter a woman’s body (something DVF is known for).

Diane von Furstenberg entitled this show: Nomad. She said: “Wherever she goes, she belongs…her clothes are her friends.” The cozy sweaters and colorful Pom pom hats seemed to be friends indeed— there for you when you have to travel, there for you when you have to brave the cold, there for you when you are eager to hibernate. The collection screamed: I want to stand out, but comfort comes first. I sincerely believe the celebs seated at the show emanated that exact feeling. They may have been dressed in couture, but even Rachel Zoe, the biggest fashionista of all, had on an LBD which looked like she had just slipped on, effortlessly, moments before she made her way to Bryant Park.
