Make-Up Magazine Mixer with Special Guest Bobbi Brown

by Jennifer Long

Bobbi BrownLast Thursday, the editorial staff of Make-Up Artist Magazine and Naimie’s Beauty Center held the Big Apple Make-Up Artist Mixer at Webster Hall in New York City. The event was a cocktail party, attended by the New York area’s most accomplished and up-and-coming makeup artists and beauty bloggers. Paul and I were excited that Beyond Beauty Basics was invited, and more excited to get to know some makeup artists, the staff of Make-Up Artist Magazine, and the event’s very special guest!

Make-Up Artist Magazine is a great resource for makeup artists of all kinds, from high fashion, to prom and wedding, to the Hollywood special effects kind. Paul and I got to chat for a few moments with the magazine’s founder, Michael Key, to discuss how he came up with his idea for the magazine. Key told us his vision was to unite the different kinds of makeup artists and give them a resource that spoke to make-up artists as a group. Make-Up Artist magazine is now global and read in about 50 different countries!

Bobbi Brown herself was on hand to sign copies of her latest book, Makeup Manual. Her latest book is an illustrated guide of professional makeup techniques for novices as well as aspiring make-up artists. The book was available to purchase at the mixer but you can also find it online. Amazon.com is currently selling it for a great price, be sure to pick one up!

Before her book signing, Brown spoke about her new partnership with her alma mater, Emerson College, the “Bobbi Brown Makeup Artistry Program at Emerson College.” What we admired most was how Brown talked a lot about the importance of education. When we got a chance to ask her (yes – we really got to talk to her!) about her strong belief in education, Bobbi told us that she always enjoys learning new things from other makeup artists, and that she also loves to share her knowledge and experience with others.

Day Two at The Makeup Show NYC 2009

by Victoria Stiles

The Makeup Show NYCDay one of the two day event was so busy that some vendors sold out of a lot of their key products! OCC’s David Klasfeld’s popular Lip Tar was virtually gone by 11AM on day two with only about 6 left! He confessed that the stock he brought to The Makeup Show was the stock he had on hand. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do but ensured that he had someone working diligently on the case! A handy tool for applying mascara (more info to come!) was also sold out and the booth was overrun with mail orders! Note to self, next time buy the products right then and there, do not take time to think about it. Just do it!

Maxi from Lifetime’s reality show Blush: Search for The Next Great Makeup Artist had the crowd entertained with his witty personality and fashionable style. An interview with the reality TV star on life after Blush plus cosmetic finds to come!
