Frumpy and dowdy are not two words I associate with the usually smoking hot Jessica Alba. Unfortunately those are exactly the words that came to mind when I got a look at her latest hairstyle. She seems to have traded in her status as a sex bomb for that of a frazzled soccer mom. This messy, shapeless ‘do does nothing to accentuate her gorgeous features and makes her look like she’d be more at home in a minivan rather than in a miniskirt.
If the young mother wanted to spice up her look, she should have bypassed this train wreck in favor of a soft lob like Zoe Saldana‘s or a cute crop like Drew Barrymore‘s. Just because she’s had a baby doesn’t mean she needs to sacrifice her style or her sex appeal. Just look at these hot mamas!
What do you think of Jessica Alba’s new hairstyle?

Turquoise tresses at Cynthia Rowley.Looks like it’s time to break out the Manic Panic. The big beauty trend for hair at Fashion Week was bright, chunky streaks of color that brought to mind punk-inspired street style circa 1996. At the Cynthia Rowley Fall 2010 fashion show, Eva Scrivo for Wella Professionals custom colored hair extensions in shades of emerald, lapis, amethyst, navy and turquoise to replicate the rich jewel tones present in the collection. Each hair extension was completely saturated with professional salon haircolor and then woven into the hair and styled, creating an element of surprise and intrigue when models hit the runway.
Super stylist Ted Gibson for beauty.com went for a version of the trend that was a little easier to DIY at the Vena Cava Fall 2010 fashion show (shown below). He used Streekers to color hair extensions in shades of hot pink, purple and green, then pulled them back into the models’ slightly mussed ponytails to give a “downtown, cool feel,” to the otherwise equestrian look.
A pop of pink at Vena Cava.We think this is one trend that just might hit the trifecta of translating in all three worlds: runway, red carpet and real world. This is the second season funky color has been featured at Fashion Week (the girls at the Spring 2010 Proenza Schouler fashion show rocked lovely lilac streaks) and Lady Gaga recently caused a stir at the Grammys with her own spin on the Crayola color trend. Adding a bright streak of color to your coif is an easy way to add a hip edge to your regularly scheduled hairstyle without a huge commitment. Now all you really have to decide is which happy hue you want to adorn your hair with.

Last week Beyond Beauty Basics attended Purple Lab’s HSN launch at Meet in New York City. We were exhausted from Fashion Week but we could not wait to go check out Purple Lab products and support Creatrix Karen Robinovitz.
Purple Lab’s new products are now on the Home Shopping Network site, and debuted at special introductory prices. Some of the big products were Silk Sheets, Huge Lips Skinny Hips and Lashionista Modelista.
Attendees were able to Skype live on-air and there were live models in their own area, doing their own makeup. Why would models do their own makeup? Because Purple Lab wanted to show how easy it is to make yourself beautiful using their products – most of us don’t have personal stylists come make us up in the morning!
Meet NYC was decked out in Purple and there were lots of goodies everywhere from Pop Chips, to cookies from Cooking with Nonna, Figenza fig vodka (amazing!) and Skinny Water, a zero calorie treat that comes in delicious flavors like Acai Grape BlueBerry and Raspberry Pomegranate.
