Holiday Party Makeup Tips

by Jennifer Long-Levy

Holiday PartyWe’re coming up on the first week of December and the holiday party season is upon us!  However, although you may want to celebrate, dress up, and have a little fun with your makeup, you have to remember some simple rules to avoid looking like you’re trying to hard.  It’s all about positive – not negative – attention.

The biggest temptation might be to match your makeup look to your outfit.  Say you’ve got a great metallic gold dress.  Wearing gold eyeshadow, lip stick, and nail polish is going to make you look like you’re wearing a costume.  The only holiday party this works for is Halloween!  Don’t clash with your dress, but generally go for makeup in colors that work well with your skin tone is your best bet.  Want to glam it up?  Go for dramatic lips OR a dramatic smoky eye – but not both!

Another don’t is glitter.  A shimmer powder is a great idea (Estee Lauder has a fantastic shimmer powder this season with a hint of gold), but powders, gels, and lotions with glitter can not only look juvenile or trashy, but it’s so messy!  You’ll leave glitter on everyone from the coat check attendant to your date.  A definite DON’T.

This season, resist the urge to fake bake or overdose on the bronzer.  If you’re feeling a little pale, wearing a dress in a great jewel tone or maybe a red lipstick can help perk up your skin.  Tanning beds may leave you seeing red, especially if you have had limited exposure to the sun over the last few months.  Likewise, your summer bronzer may be too deep for your winter skin. So while we agree, a bronzer is a great look for a party, the trick is picking the right one for your skin tone. Look for a powder in a golden tone and avoid colors that are too orange-y. Fair-skinned girls should go for tan or honey-toned bronzer. For slightly deeper medium or olive skin, a medium brown or terracotta color should look great. For dark complexions, try a deep copper shade. The trick is to not use a bronzer more than one shade darker than your skin. Sweep your bronzer across your cheekbones, jawline (don’t forget to blend!), chin, nose, and forehead. I even like to sweep just a tiny bit over my temples.

You may be tempted to powder your nose more than once at a party. A good thing to have with you is some blotting paper instead (or before using powder). This will soak up the excess oils on your face without smudging your makeup or leaving you with a face caked with powder. Always bring some lipstick, liner, and concealer as well to make the most necessary touch-ups throughout the evening.

Prescriptives Lustre Collection for Holiday 2009

by Jennifer Long-Levy

I was especialustre-collection-holiday-warmlly excited to check out Prescriptive Lustre Collection for Holiday 2009 because it’s the company’s last Christmas.  As we give Prescriptives a sad farewell, I’ll be happy to celebrate throughout the season by wearing their last holiday line.

I got to sample the eyeshadow quad, lip gloss, and shimmer cheek color all in the cool palette.  You can find the entire Prescriptives Lustre Collection for Holiday 2009 at Prescriptives.com or at your local Prescriptives counter.  There’s also a great palette of warm shades (pictured left) I want to check out!

coolquadThe Limited-Edition Lustre Baked Eye Color Quad in Cool
Eyes shimmer in lustrous color with four high-pigment pearlized shades from the limited-edition Lustre Baked Eye Color Quad in a Cool palette. Each eye shade is “baked” on a terracotta plate for a creamier texture and pure pearl finish. Wear each shade alone or blend together for a multi-dimensional jewel-toned eye look, I love how this quad has just the right amount of shimmer. The tone and texture is so rich, you can put on a lighter layer to make it work for day (or maybe for the office holiday party) or go with a richer layer for a great evening look.  $40

shimmer-cheek-colorLimited-Edition Lustre Shimmer Cheek Color
Limited-edition Lustre Shimmer Cheek Color gives skin a luminous, subtle shimmer and sheer hint of color with soft golden highlights. Infused with Vitamin E. Available in two shades: Warm and Cool. I sampled it in Cool and I love how well it goes with the eye color, and how the shimmer makes my face look so glamorous and luminous! You can do some cheekbone sculpting with this one, too – but don’t try to wear it for day.  It’s definitely a nighttime look.  Dermatologist-tested and Non-acnegenic. $24

Moonbeam Reflective Gloss in Ruby (Limited Edition)
Take lips to a whole new dimension of chic with Moonbeam Reflective Gloss. This revolutionary gloss utilizes new pigment technology that actually enhances light’s reflective qualities, creating a super shiny shimmering lip look without feeling sticky or tacky. Moisturizing properties condition, soothe and help heal dry, chapped lips. I tried it in Ruby, a shimmering limited edition color from the cool palette. The sheer, shimmery deep reddish-pink looks great on and it felt minty and refreshing. $17.50

L’Oreal Paris EverPure Moisture Deep Restorative Masque

by Jennifer Long-Levy

loreal_ever_pureIf you color your hair, you know how frustrating it can be when you color fades quickly, oxidizes, or just gets dull.  You may also experience some dryness and split-ends.  Salon deep conditioning treatments can be expensive and you might want to avoid some other products that can worsen the effects shampoo, conditioners and other elements have had on your color.

Well, thankfully L’Oreal now makes sulfate-free color care products!  L’Oreal Paris EverPure Moisture Deep Restorative Masque deep conditions your hair in about five minutes (I have heard some people leave if on longer) in the shower.  It smells fresh and minty and it left my hair feeling silky and smooth – but didn’t weigh it down (a huge plus).

I’m actually allergic to sulfates so this was an extra bonus, but sulfates also fade color and can react badly with other hair products and treatments. At around $8, this is definitely a worthwhile bargain.
