Behind the Brands: The people who bring you beauty

by S

Some of the wealthiest people in the world control the companies that put cosmetics and skincare on your face. Here are just a few of them.

Bernard Arnault

# 7 on the Forbes list with $26 Billion in assets. Bernard owns LVMH, (which stands for Louis Vuitton, Moet, Hennessy). LVMH also owns Christian Dior, Fresh, Guerlain, Givenchy and Sephora (to name a few).

Liliane Bettencourt

#12 on the Forbes list with $12.7 Billion in assets. Liliane is the proud owner of L’Oreal.

L’Oreal owns L’Oreal (obviously), Lancome, Kiehls, Shu Uemura and Armani.

Leonard and Ronald Lauder

Leonard and Ronald are #’s 249 and #287 on the Forbes list with a combined $6.7 Billion in assets. Their mother, Estee Lauder formed the Estee Lauder company in 1946. The company has grown considerably since then as they now own Estee Lauder, Clinique, Prescriptives, Origins, Crème de la Mer, Bobbi Brown, Aveda, Darphin, MAC, Jo Malone, Donna Karan, Missoni, Aramis, Lab Series, Kiton, Flirt, grass roots, good skin, Sean John Fragrances, Bumble and Bumble, Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger and American Beauty. Quite a mouthful, isn’t it?

Count and Countess D’Ornano

Although, not the wealthiest of the cosmetic giants, the Count and Countess D’Ornano, owners of Sisley Cosmetics, certainly have the pedigree’s and style to produce one of the world’s best luxury skincare lines.

The Countess

Here are a few pictures from inside the Paris home of the D’Ornano’s…

Do it yourself Hair-cut:Oster Fast-Teq hair clipper

by Beyond Beauty Basics

Oster Fast-Teq hair clipper

Although it’s not for everyone, if you have short hair and you’re so inclined, why not give trimming your own hair (or someone elses) a whirl?

As a child, I grew up getting most of my haircuts at home with a clipper very similar to the one pictured above. I had a basic crewcut as well as a flat top that was exactly the same from my mother as it would have been from the barber shop.

willheader.jpg(Supermodel, William Levy Gutierrez, right, probably doesn’t cut his own hair, but this is an example of an easy style to achieve with a clipper)Now that I’m older, I don’t always have time to go and get my haircut, so I still sometimes use the clipper myself for a quick trim in between professional cuts. If I say so myself, I do a pretty good job (although, it’s much easier to have someone else (that you trust) cut the back).

I’ve had 3 or 4 different clippers since I’ve left home and find that it’s best to buy the ones that come as a set with all of the attachments. They make the process much easier and much faster.

The one above is available online at Amazon and is $49.99

NEW: Trish McEvoy Brow Builder

by Beyond Beauty Basics

Trish McEvoy has a new product for filling in your brows. It’s a pen with fibers, but instead of the gel being colored (like mascara), the fibers are. It comes in two colors, #1 (blonde) and #2 (brown). Applied correctly, it actually looks as if you have considerablyvalen.jpg more brow than before without the drawn in look.If you have the shape, but are short on fullness, this is the product for you.

As you probably already know, this season is all about thick, dark, perfectly shaped brows (as well as extended liquid liner and red lips). Make sure you have all the right tools as the “season” will soon be upon us.

MAC Limited Edition: Stylistics Collection and Fragrance

by Beyond Beauty Basics

mac_logo.gifWe all want the “It” bag, the “It” shoe, or the “It” whatever everyone else wants… now you can do that with the new limited edition MAC Stylistics Collection and it’s new limited edition fragrance, Air of Style. When collections are limited edition, you have to be the first to get it or it’s gone and then it becomes the “It” collection. MAC’s Stylistics wont hit counters until November 29th, and the collection is going to be absolutely amazing! What do you think of when you hear the word Stylistics? This is a total couture collection with gem-encrusted compacts and luxurious powders. The price point is high for MAC but when you want the “It” collection, you know you may have to pay a higher price.

What I love is there is going to be a fragrance to go with the Stylistics collection, it’s limited edition, and it’s named the Air of Style. The bottle looks like a teardrop and is hand-blown in Murano, Italy. You can actually reuse the bottle after you are done with the fragrance. Jennifer Balbier, senior vice president of global product development for MAC stated in WWD that the fragrance is a “baroque floral.” The notes are topped with red dates, wild red peonies, and island cypress and white pepper, a center of tuberose absolute, orange blossom, jasmine, ylang-ylang and orris, and then you dry down to the leather rear woods, vetiver, tonka beans and amber crystals.

The collection is only going to be available MAC stores, Henri Bendel, Saks Fifth Avenue, and select Nordstrom locations, a total 175 locations.
