The Science of Beauty: It’s Simply Symmetrical

by Paul Baranda

Beauty is most certainly in the eye of the beholder. Although, there is a science behind what is pleasing to most. Symmetry is probably the most important factor in relative beauty.

Max Factor invented a device for measuring the face. I’ve not found any actual articles explaining the true nature of the device, but my guess would be that he would measure the face and then subtly change the features to be more symmetrical through make-up. Max would contour the face, shape the brow and even change the hairline, as he was first a wig maker.

Some of the women (and men) that are considered the most attractive people in the world have near-perfect symmetry. Their eyes are the same size and are the same distance away from the nose. The lips are the same thickness on the top and the bottom. The ears stick out of the head at the same angle on both sides. This could go on and on, but you get the point.

DANGER! Sharp objects can be hazardous

by Paul Baranda

I was just writing my last post and looked up to see a somewhat attractive woman doing what seemed like applying her make-up. Upon my second look, I noticed that it was not that at all.

She was separating her eyelashes with a safety pin…ON A MOVING TRAIN! Maybe she thinks ‘it’s a “safety” pin… if I stick myself in the eye it won’t do any damage’?

Okay, even I at times have run with scissors (maybe, when I was 8.) but I can’t even drink something on this train (it bounces so much) and someone has a pin ¼ inch away from their eye. That’s just downright insane!

The next time I see her I expect she’ll have an eye patch.

Be safe.

Growing Old Gracefully

by Paul Baranda

I find it quite sad that society has placed such a burden on women (and men for that matter) that ‘if you’re not young and beautiful, you’re no longer valuable’ or part of the “in” crowd.

(Irene Sinclair, left, 96 year old Dove campaign model)

Everyone is made up of the sum of there parts and (I would hope that for as vain as we may seem that we all believe) our physical being is only a small portion of who we are. I, very much enjoy the company of my elders, as I enjoy listening to their life experiences from days gone by as well as gaining insight from their accumulated knowledge. I find the lines and wrinkles to be mementos of a good hardy laugh or even an unimagined surprise. (Maya Angelou, right)

I helped an elderly woman yesterday that has had so many surgeries on her face that her eyebrows (without exaggerating) were at least two inches above her eye openings. She had scars in her hairline from the bottom of one ear to the bottom of the other. Her ears were actually pulled back (I’m guessing from many facelifts) so far that she had at least one extra inch of skin than any human I’ve ever seen on each side of her face.

This woman was of considerable means. She lives in one of New York City’s most prestigious hotels (when in town) and in another in Palm Beach.

I wonder when I see people (like this) if they made this adaptation to themselves because of someone in their life, society in general or just because they can (financially)?

I, personally, am well aware of my physical faults. I do the best that I can to hide them either with make-up, additional hair and/or clothing. I’ve considered in my past having my nose fixed or adding higher cheekbones, but as I get older I realize that what I look like is not who I am.

If people don’t like what I (or you, for that matter) look like (in particular, when we get old), then maybe they just shouldn’t look.

Wouldn’t you rather grow old gracefully?

Smell good like your favorite Celebs!

by Paul Baranda

Summer fragrance calls for a light and refreshing alternative to a heavy eau de parfum, and we have got the list of what your favorite celeb is wearing.

Tip: the heat of the summer will slightly change your fragrance, that’s why we always say not to rub your wrists together when you try a fragrance. Just spray and smell, no wrist rub.

Body Mists are perfect for summer, Sarah Michelle Gellar loves L’Eau d’Issey Summer. It’s a lighter alternative and is a soft floral blend of peony and rose.

Using a fragrance bath gel or soap is also a great way to stay smelling fresh all day. Jessica Biel is known to be a fan of Juicy Couture’s Body Milk Mist. We also love Kenzo Amour Body Nectar, it is a luscious mix of cherry blossoms, frankincense, and white tea, delicious!!!
